Why is my water bill suddenly high?

Bill jumped but you're not using more? That's often a hidden leak quietly running up the cost.

Hidden leaks Simple meter check Free advice

If your water bill has climbed and nothing's changed at home, the usual explanation is a leak somewhere you can't see — quietly wasting water (and money) around the clock.

The usual culprits

  • A running toilet. A silently leaking cistern can waste a surprising amount of water — often the biggest hidden cost.
  • Dripping taps. A steady drip adds up over weeks.
  • A hidden pipe leak under the floor, in a wall or underground.
  • Overflows trickling away where you don't notice them.

A quick check you can do

Take a reading off your water meter, then don't use any water for an hour or two. Take another reading. If it's moved, water's escaping somewhere. For toilets, pop a little food colouring in the cistern — if colour creeps into the bowl without flushing, it's leaking.
